I moved from Belgium to Maui in 1996.  As I am not a native American, please excuse me if I don't write proper English... This is probably just another blog out of the gazillions blogs of our CyberSpace.  I'll try to make it interesting for people who consider moving to Maui by talking about how we live here versus the mainland or Europe.  Over the past 10 years, the way we live here has already tremendously changed.  The "island lifestyle" is slowly but surely disappearing, believe me!  For example, when I came from Belgium, over there we were driving at 80mph on the highway and when you were driving at 80mph you were amongst the snails!  Here, there were NO highways, we only had "main" roads which were only 2 lanes wide and we were driving at 40mph at the most.  Now... we have highways or something that looks like highways!  I should rather say that we have "portions of highways" hoping that one day the County will finally put them end to end to be "one" highway but that's OK, when you live on Maui you must accept all these weird things!  As they are not yet "real" highways, or sometimes not legally large enough to be named a highway,  the speed is still limited to 40mph, but guess what? We are already driving at 60mph on them.    Everybody drives and talks on his/her cell phone at the same time and in 10 years only, the pace of the island on our roads has changed so much!  The stress is around the corner...  What's great though is that our longest "highway" is probably not longer than 15 miles and will never be otherwise you'll end up in the ocean... and fortunately... this will never change :-)
