Kahului is the largest town on the Hawaiian island of Maui and is located along the north shore of central Maui. Kahului hosts Maui's main airport (Kahului Airport - ogg), deep-draft harbor, light industrial areas, and commercial shopping centers. It is a census-designated place (CDP) within Maui County, Hawaii with a total population (as of the 2000 Census) of 20,146 persons.
Kahului is the retail center for Maui residents and there are several malls and major stores (including department stores in the Queen Kaahumanu Center); other significant groupings of stores are the Happy Valley area of Wailuku, Maui Market Place (Lowes, Borders, Office Max, Kau-Kau Market to name a few) and Maui Mall with its movie Megaplex, HiHop. Retailing changed greatly with the arrival of big-box retailers from the U.S. Mainland, including Wal-Mart and Home Depot.
Kahului is also home to many popular restaurants such as Koho's, located in the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center, Ichiban, located in the Kahului Shopping Center, Restaurant Matsu, and L&L Drive Inn, located in the Maui Market Place.
Kahului is not generally considered a tourist destination, but does feature the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum, Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanaha Beach County Park, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

Wailuku is located just west of Kahului, at the mouth of the Īao Valley. In the early 20th century Wailuku was the main tourist destination on Maui, though it has since been eclipsed with the rise of the resort towns such as Kaanapali or Kihei-Wailea-Makena so much that there are no hotels to speak of in Wailuku.
Historic sites in the town include Kaahumanu Church (named after one of Hawaii's great monarchs, Queen Kaahumanu) which dates to 1876, and the Bailey House, also a 19th century relic that is home to a history museum.
There are two ancient Hawaiian temples near Wailuku, called "heiaus" — the Halekii Heiau and the Pihanakalani Heiau. Both date back hundreds of years, and were used for human sacrifices by the native Hawaiians.
Wailuku is also hosting the buildings of the County administration and the County Court.
